Illustration of an RFL-3N Rifleman BattleMech from Technical Readout: 3025, showing the wing-shaped comms array across the top and the twin-barrelled arms
That wing across the top is the Garret T11-A comms array. A superb radio, and it tended to draw fire.

Everyone knows the Rifleman runs hot. I think what almost nobody mentions is that it was never supposed to fight the way people use it.

It's an anti-aircraft mech. Kallon built the first one in 2504, which makes it one of the oldest designs anybody still fields: of the chassis on this site, only the Thunderbolt and the Locust are older. The version everyone pictures, the RFL-3N, arrived in 2770.

What you've got. Two large lasers and two AC/5s in arms that swivel, two medium lasers either side of the cockpit, and a Garret D2j targeting system that's genuinely one of the best ever fitted to a mech. It can flip its arms over to shoot behind itself. And it has 10 heat sinks and seven and a half tons of armour.

Now do the maths. Fire everything while walking and you make 25 heat against 10 sinks. That's 15 points of heat every single turn. It looks like a design mistake until you remember what it was for. Anti-aircraft work comes in bursts. You fire on the pass, the fighter turns round for another go, and you cool down while it's doing that.

So what went wrong? Three hundred years of war. Commanders ran short of mechs and started using Riflemans on the front line, where there's no pause between passes and the enemy's a sixty-ton heavy standing in front of you. There, with thin armour and no hands, it's genuinely bad. The reputation is real. It's just attached to the wrong job.

If you're choosing one: the RFL-3N is the classic, the RFL-3C is the better front-line machine, the RFL-8D is the one that fixed its reputation, and the Clan C 3 is the 3N with every part upgraded.

Why it earns its tonnage

Everything about the 3N makes sense once you picture aircraft coming over. Long-range guns only, because fighters don't come close. Arms that swivel and even flip over backwards, so you can track something that's passed overhead. A targeting system good enough to hold a lock on a fast-moving target. And a heat budget built around firing in bursts with breaks in between.

The Garret electronics deserve a mention. The D2j targeting-tracking system held its reputation for centuries, and when the Free Worlds League rebuilt the Rifleman as the 5M in 3049 they left it alone. The T11-A comms array was just as good, although its wing-shaped housing tended to draw fire.

What it can't do is brawl. Seven and a half tons of armour, a particularly thin rear, no hands or lower arm actuators, and a torso that only twists forty degrees. Against a lighter mech its size carries it through. Against something its own weight, standing and trading, it loses, and the commander who put it there was told as much by the design.

One last engineering detail: both autocannons feed off a single twenty-round magazine. Enough for short, sharp bursts. Not enough for a long fight.

The heat maths on the 3N

What you fireHeat madeAfter 10 sinks
Both AC/5s, walking3Cooling
Both large lasers, walking17+7 a turn
Everything, walking25+15 a turn

Against aircraft you fire one pass and cool on the next. Against a mech standing in front of you there is no next pass, and that one row at the bottom is the Rifleman's entire reputation.

Six centuries in the wrong job

The early Riflemans were a struggle. The 1N overheated badly enough that Kallon went back to the drawing board, and the 2N fifty years later was better and still ran too hot. The 3N in 2770 swapped some of the heat-hungry energy weapons for autocannons, and that's the one that stuck.

Kallon still wasn't happy with it, and within a few years they'd built a replacement: the JagerMech, meant to fix the Rifleman's heat, armour and endurance. It never replaced it. The two ended up serving side by side for centuries, which tells you the Rifleman was doing something right.

When the Star League fell, Riflemans ended up in every Successor State army, with House Davion holding the most and using them hard against the Combine. That's where the front-line habit started, as losses forced them into roles they weren't built for. Hanse Davion himself designed two variants, the 4D and the 3C, trying to make it a better line mech.

By the FedCom Civil War it had a poor reputation, and then something odd happened. The 7th FedCom RCT blockaded Kallon's factory on Talon, cutting off JagerMech production, so Kallon pushed its experimental RFL-8D into full production as a stopgap. The 8D was good. Both sides of the civil war ended up fielding it, and the Rifleman's name recovered on the back of a blockade.

A bit of trivia to finish on: the Rifleman's look was borrowed from the Destroid Defender in the anime Macross, which makes it one of the original Unseen designs.

How these are rated

Every verdict below is against other Riflemans available in the same era. One variant fails the Trap test, a rushed ComStar build from Tukayyid.

Worth it

Nothing in its era does the chassis's job better for the money.

Solid

Does the job competently. Another variant does it better or cheaper, but there is no reason to avoid this one.

Situational

Only earns its Battle Value if you specifically need what it carries. C3, stealth, a command console, flak, jump jets.

Trap

Another variant in the same era, at no more than 3 percent above its Battle Value, matches or beats it on every Alpha Strike damage band, on armour, on structure, and carries every special ability it has. Nothing gained, something lost, no dearer.

Only the Trap tier is calculated. It is worked out from the variant data rather than decided by me, which means it is falsifiable: to argue with it you only have to name something the cheaper machine gives up. The other three are my opinion and you should treat them that way. 1 of the 23 Rifleman variants fail the Trap test. The full rating scale is here, including what it deliberately does not measure.

The variants worth arguing about

All 23 are in the table further down. These are the ones that change how the machine plays.

RFL-3N: the anti-aircraft original

Walk 4 / Run 6 / Jump 0 · 10 Single · 240 Fusion Engine
2x Large Laser, 2x AC/5, 2x Medium Laser

The 2770 Rifleman everybody pictures. Two large lasers and two AC/5s in swivelling arms, two mediums by the cockpit, a superb Garret targeting system, and only 10 heat sinks. Brilliant at shooting down aircraft and not built for much else.

RFL-3C: Hanse Davion’s line mech

Worth it

60 tons · BV 1066 · PV 28 · Brawler · 3026
Walk 4 / Run 6 / Jump 0 · 10 Single · 240 Fusion Engine
2x AC/10, 2x Medium Laser

Davion's second go: two AC/10s instead of the lasers and AC/5s, and an extra ton of armour. Cooler, harder-hitting up close, and far better suited to the front-line work Riflemans kept getting.

RFL-5M: the sensible rebuild

Worth it

Walk 4 / Run 6 / Jump 0 · 12 IS Double · 240 XL Engine
2x Large Laser, 2x Ultra AC/5, 2x Medium Laser

The 3049 Free Worlds rebuild: Ultra AC/5s, twelve doubles, CASE on the ammo and an extra ton of plate, all paid for with an XL engine. They kept the Garret electronics, because why would you replace those.

RFL-8D: the blockade baby

2x Rotary AC/5, 2x ER Medium Laser

The one that saved the name. Two rotary AC/5s, four ER mediums, twelve tons of armour and jump jets. Kallon rushed it into production when their JagerMech line was blockaded, and both sides of the FedCom Civil War ended up using it.

MUSE WIND: two hyper-assault Gauss rifles

Worth it

Walk 4 / Run 6 / Jump 4 · 10 IS Double · 240 XL Engine(IS)
2x HAG/20, 2x Medium Pulse Laser

Nigel Griffin's mixed-tech experiment: a hyper-assault Gauss 20 in each arm, Clan pulse lasers and Clan armour. Ridiculous on paper and very good on the table.

Rifleman C 3: the 3N, upgraded

Worth it

60 tons · BV 1871 · PV 38 · Sniper · 3132
Walk 4 / Run 6 / Jump 0 · 14 Clan Double · 240 Fusion (Clan) Engine
2x ER Large Laser, 2x Ultra AC/5, 2x ER Medium Laser

Clan Sea Fox's version: ER large lasers and Ultra AC/5s with integrated CASE, ER mediums, fourteen doubles. The 3N's layout with every piece upgraded.

On the table

Piloting one. Fire in bursts. Pick a weapon group, fire, and let the heat settle before the next big turn. If there are aircraft or VTOLs in the scenario, you're the best thing on the table for them. If there aren't, stay at range and let heavier mechs take the hits, because you can't.

Fighting one. Close in and stay close. Past its long-range sweet spot a 3N has nothing but thin armour and a heat problem. Its rear is especially thin, but don't assume you're safe behind it, because those arms can flip over and fire backwards.

What I see go wrong. People fire everything every turn because it's all long range and everything's in reach. Two turns later they're at thirty heat, sluggish and missing, and the enemy walks straight up to them. The Rifleman rewards patience more than anything else here.

Against OpFor Command

If you run solo games with our AI opponent, the Rifleman is split: 11 Snipers, 7 Brawlers and 5 Skirmishers.

Give the engine an aircraft to shoot at and a sniper Rifleman does exactly what it was built for.

Common questions

Why does the Rifleman overheat so badly?

The RFL-3N makes 25 heat on a walking alpha against 10 heat sinks. It was designed as an anti-aircraft platform, expected to fire on a fighter's pass and cool down while the aircraft turned around. Used as a front-line mech with no breaks between turns, it overheats quickly.

What is the best Rifleman variant?

The RFL-3N at BV 1039 is the classic anti-aircraft mech. The RFL-3C is better in a line fight, the RFL-8D is the most complete Inner Sphere version, and the Clan-built Rifleman C 3 upgrades every part of the 3N layout.

Is the Rifleman a bad mech?

Not at its intended job. It has excellent targeting electronics, swivelling arms that can even fire behind it, and strong long-range weapons. Its poor reputation comes from being used as a front-line mech, where its thin armour and heat problems show.

What replaced the Rifleman?

Kallon built the JagerMech to fix the Rifleman's heat, armour and endurance, but it never replaced it. The two served together for centuries. Technicron's Quickdraw was also pitched as a front-line alternative.

Why is the Rifleman associated with House Davion?

The Federated Suns held the largest concentration of Riflemans through the Succession Wars and used them heavily against the Draconis Combine. Hanse Davion personally designed two variants, the RFL-4D and RFL-3C.
