60 tons · Clan OmniMech · 15 configurations · 2963 to 3144
Clan Smoke Jaguar named this one to insult two other Clans at once, and my caste has never pretended otherwise. Clan Wolf's Timber Wolf and Clan Coyote's Lupus both contributed moulds and design lineage to this chassis, and the Jaguars repaid that contribution by naming the result Mad Dog. It is not subtle, and it was not meant to be.
The irony is that the insult did not stop the machine from working. It spread to near every touman in existence within a generation, favoured especially by Clan Ghost Bear, and the Inner Sphere's own nickname for it is a plain physical description rather than a targeting error or a named battle: the reverse-jointed legs, the slumping posture and the raised cockpit read as a bird of prey, and Vulture is what they called it.
What it is. Sixty tons, walk five, run eight, on a 300 extralight engine, with twenty-eight tons of pod space over eight and a half tons of ferro-fibrous armour. Introduced in 2963, and it has been a fire-support fixture in Clan lines ever since.
And what almost none of the 15 configurations do. Exactly one of them carries a jump jet. Not most, the way a Timber Wolf spreads jump capability across several loadouts. One. And that one configuration is also the only one built entirely around weapons that need no ammunition at all, which is not a coincidence worth ignoring.
A note on this one. Clan machines on this site are written from the perspective of a Clan technician rather than the Inner Sphere MechTech who narrates the rest. Same research, same data, different chair.
Sixty tons, walk five, run eight, and twenty-eight tons of that spent on pod space rather than armour or engine. The Prime carries twin large pulse lasers, twin medium pulse lasers and twin LRM 20s, both launchers indirect-capable, for 4/4/4 on the Alpha Strike card: a flat four at every range band. That shoulder-mounted missile silhouette is the reason this chassis is recognisable at a glance.
The insult in the name. Clan Smoke Jaguar built this as a second-generation OmniMech derived from Clan Coyote's Lupus, and it shares tooling with Clan Wolf's Timber Wolf besides. Naming the result Mad Dog, after borrowing so directly from both Clans, was a deliberate slight, and the fact that the machine went on to serve in nearly every touman in existence has not softened the insult with time. It has just made it a very widely repeated one.
One jump jet in fifteen configurations. The S is the only one, and it is not built that way by accident. Twin ER PPCs and three medium pulse lasers draw on no ammunition supply whatsoever, so the single configuration that can reposition under fire is also the single configuration that never has to worry about running dry while doing it. Every other configuration on this page stays on the ground and, in several cases, stays dependent on a magazine.
What that trade buys. Fourteen of fifteen configurations spend the tonnage a jump jet would cost on more pod space instead: more missile tubes, more ballistic weight, more dedicated ammunition. This chassis was built to sit at range and put ordnance downrange, not to manoeuvre for an angle, and the numbers bear that out consistently across a hundred and eighty-one years of refits.
Clan Smoke Jaguar designed this as a second-generation OmniMech, built from the bones of Clan Coyote's Lupus and sharing production moulds with Clan Wolf's Timber Wolf. Both of those Clans could reasonably claim some credit for the result. Neither got any. The Jaguars named it Mad Dog specifically as a slight against both, and the choice was deliberate enough that period sources describe it outright as an obtuse insult rather than a coincidence of naming.
The Inner Sphere's own name arrived by simple observation rather than any deeper reasoning. The reverse-jointed legs, the slumped stance and the raised, prominent cockpit resemble a carrion bird closely enough that Vulture was the label from first contact onward, and it never needed revising.
Production spread quickly and widely. Introduced in 2963, this chassis reached near ubiquity across the Clan touman within a generation, though Clan Ghost Bear in particular favoured it, and later took over manufacture at Bergan Industries after their move into the Inner Sphere. The most recent configuration on this page, dated 3144, comes from that continuing production line.
Every verdict below is against other Mad Dog configurations. As with every OmniMech on this site, the Trap test finds nothing on armour, frame or engine, since all fifteen share them. The tiers are judgement, not arithmetic.
Nothing in its era does the chassis's job better for the money.
Does the job competently. Another variant does it better or cheaper, but there is no reason to avoid this one.
Only earns its Battle Value if you specifically need what it carries. C3, stealth, a command console, flak, jump jets.
Another variant in the same era, at no more than 3 percent above its Battle Value, matches or beats it on every Alpha Strike damage band, on armour, on structure, and carries every special ability it has. Nothing gained, something lost, no dearer.
Only the Trap tier is calculated. It is worked out from the variant data rather than decided by me, which means it is falsifiable: to argue with it you only have to name something the cheaper machine gives up. The other three are my opinion and you should treat them that way. 0 of the 15 Mad Dog variants fail the Trap test. The full rating scale is here, including what it deliberately does not measure.
All 15 are in the table further down. These are the ones that change what you are actually facing.

2x Large Pulse Laser, 2x Medium Pulse Laser, 2x LRM 20
Twin large pulse lasers, twin medium pulse lasers and twin LRM 20s, both launchers on indirect fire. A flat four points of damage at every range band, and the exact silhouette that made this chassis recognisable: shoulders that carry the missiles, not the arms.

2x Gauss Rifle
Two Gauss rifles, nothing else. Three points of damage at short, medium and long range, dead level, at zero overheat. The cheapest configuration here, and one of the cleanest: no ammunition surprises, no heat surprises, just two guns that always hit for the same number.

2x ER PPC, 3x Medium Pulse Laser
The only configuration in the entire chassis that carries a jump jet, and it is not a coincidence that it is also the only one built entirely around energy weapons. Twin ER PPCs and three medium pulse lasers need no ammunition at all, which means the one Mad Dog that can reposition is also the one that never has to worry about running dry.

An Arrow IV launcher with two tons of dedicated ammunition, an LRM 20, and pulse and ER medium lasers in each arm for self-defence. A genuine artillery platform, not a front-line combatant, and it should not be fielded as one.

2x ER Medium Laser, 2x Medium Pulse Laser, 2x LRT 15
Underwater myomer, torpedo tubes instead of missile racks, twin ER mediums and twin medium pulse lasers above the waterline. The weakest damage figures in the chassis on dry land, and the only configuration that can fight from a lake bed. The same trade-off this chassis's own cousins make with their U configurations.
Fielding one. Pick the range band before the engagement starts, because fourteen of the fifteen configurations cannot change their mind about it once committed. This is a fire-support chassis first. Let something else hold the front while it puts ordnance downrange.
Opposing one. At 1892 to 2676 Battle Value, close the distance with confidence. Only the S can follow you over terrain a walking machine cannot cross, and every other configuration here is fighting the range band it was built for or nothing at all.
What I observe going wrong. Warriors treat every Clan OmniMech as though it might jump, and spend a turn preparing for a manoeuvre that fourteen out of fifteen Mad Dogs are physically unable to make. Confirm the configuration before you plan around a jump jet that probably is not there.
If you run solo games with our AI opponent, the Mad Dog closes out the pattern this trio of Clan pages has been building.
Damage figures are the Alpha Strike short, medium and long values. Every configuration shares the same engine, frame and armour, so only the pods change.

Ninety tons, from Clan Diamond Shark rather than Smoke Jaguar, and a different lineage entirely despite the naming echo.

The Inner Sphere’s own shoulder-launcher missile boat, and the closest thing to a direct silhouette match this chassis has outside the Clans.
Clan Smoke Jaguar chose the name deliberately, as a slight against Clan Wolf and Clan Coyote. The chassis borrows production moulds from Clan Wolf's Timber Wolf and descends from Clan Coyote's Lupus, and Mad Dog was picked to mock both contributions rather than credit them.
Plain physical resemblance. The reverse-jointed legs, the slumped posture and the raised, prominent cockpit read as a bird of prey on first contact, and the Inner Sphere name stuck without needing any further justification.
Only one of the fifteen configurations, the S, and it is also the only configuration built entirely around weapons that use no ammunition. The other fourteen stay on the ground.
The C for a clean, zero-overheat all-rounder with the cheapest price tag in the chassis, the D for the highest short-range damage figure here, and the H for the configuration closest to the chassis's classic reputation. The Prime carries the name recognition but several other configurations outperform it.
Close the distance. At 1892 to 2676 Battle Value, only one of fifteen configurations can follow you anywhere a walking machine cannot, so forcing a fight inside its preferred range band removes most of what makes the chassis dangerous.
